Livingston have secured the return of 24-year-old Celtic left back Adam Montgomery on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 Championship campaign. Montgomery will wear the number 24 shirt and will re-join fellow loanee defender Mitchell Robertson under head coach Glenn Whelan.
Montgomery’s first spell at Livingston began in the 2025/26 season, where he made eight appearances before a recurring calf injury forced Celtic to recall him in January 2026. The injury ended his loan early, but he has now returned to full fitness and is ready to contribute to the Lions’ push for promotion.
The Scotsman is a Celtic academy product who joined the club at the age of six. Over six years he has made 20 first-team appearances for Celtic and has been loaned out on seven occasions - including spells at Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Fleetwood Town, Motherwell and Queen’s Park - before his most recent return to Livingston.
In a statement, Livingston thanked Celtic for facilitating the move. “We’re delighted to announce the signing of Adam Montgomery, with the defender returning to the club on a season-long loan from Premiership Champions, Celtic,” the club said. The statement added that Montgomery will be a key part of the squad for the 2026/27 campaign and that the Lions were grateful to Celtic for their support in making the deal happen.
Livingston’s former manager David Martindale praised Celtic for terminating the loan in January, noting the financial relief it provided. “It was a touch of ‘class’ from Celtic to help us out financially,” Martindale said. He highlighted the support from Celtic’s staff - Shaun Maloney, Stephen McManus and Chris McCart - and mentioned that the termination freed up finances for Livingston to seek other options.
Celtic’s role in the summer move was also acknowledged by the Lions. The club thanked Celtic for pushing the transfer through, recognising the club’s willingness to allow Montgomery to gain valuable playing time.
Now back to full fitness, Montgomery aims to establish himself in the starting XI from the opening weeks of the season. With the experience he gained during his first loan spell, he is expected to play a key role in helping Glenn Whelan’s side navigate the challenges of the Championship.
The 24-year-old will wear the number 24 shirt for the Lions and is set to begin the 2026/27 season with a renewed focus on contributing to Livingston’s ambitions in the Scottish Championship.
