Livingston FC is excited to announce the appointment of Glenn Whelan as the club's new Head Coach. The former Republic of Ireland international joins the club after a remarkable playing career that spanned over 20 years, during which he made more than 700 senior appearances and earned 91 caps for the national team. Known for his combative style and intelligence on the pitch, Whelan is particularly recognized for his nine-year tenure at Stoke City, where he played over 300 matches in the English Premier League and contributed to the team's journey to the 2011 FA Cup Final. Whelan began his career at Manchester City and also played for clubs such as Bury, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Heart of Midlothian, Fleetwood Town, and Bristol Rovers before transitioning into coaching after retiring in 2023. On the international stage, he represented Ireland in UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016, gaining valuable experience under renowned managers Giovanni Trapattoni and Martin O’Neill. Since moving into coaching, Whelan has built an impressive resume, starting at Bristol Rovers where he combined playing with coaching duties, later helping the club secure promotion to English League One. He also contributed to the Republic of Ireland national team setup, working alongside former teammate John O’Shea. Most recently, he served as Assistant Manager at Wigan Athletic, where he took on interim first-team responsibilities. Now, Whelan is ready to lead Livingston FC into the 2026/27 campaign. After his appointment, he expressed his pride and commitment to the club, while Sporting Director David Martindale emphasized the alignment of Whelan's coaching philosophy with the club's values.
